There is a school of thought that you should judge a game by how much the mechanics immerse you in the theme of the game. By this standard, Steam: Rails to Riches is a runaway success. Navigating the loops within loops strategy feels like piecing together endless tiny cogs inside a steam engine.

I'm considering to purchase this game but I'm still on the fence about it because some reviews that I've read mentioned that it won't be good enough for two players (and I play with only two players most of the time).

Despite that, some expansions do provide the two player maps. Hopefully you can help me out to decide whether it's worth for me to get this game or not? Maybe a little background about our taste might help.

How to play steam rails to riches free

We mostly play Agricola, Keyflower and Terra Mystica. I thought of getting this game as it introduces new mechanics (pick up and delivery) and also have some economics involved. Also, if it's good then maybe we can get the expansion later on, which adds in stocks management into the game. I'll be super thankful if you can share with me your experience with the game.

In hopes that it can help me to decide. My bias: Steam R2R is my favorite Martin Wallace game, and one of my all time favorites! With that said:2 players: No. Not worth the cost of the and the expansion just for a 2 player experience. Some neat homebrew variants on boardgamegeek, but still not enough for the cost.3-5 players: HECK YES.Strategy: YES!

Only 'player luck' gets in your way. Like Terra Mystica, there's no random elements during the game.Accessibility: Yes, the 'basic' game is enough to get semi-newbies who only played Ticket to Ride able to understand it. The downside is you do need to explain more than usual, unlike Agricola where Uwe says to explain the game while playing.Alternatives: get Age of Steam if you want something more challenging and a wee bit more luck. Get Railways of the World if you want more theme and the old Railroad Tycoon video game feeling.I only prefer Steam because of its pure accessibility for newcomers, smaller space, less rules, and expansions. I own both Steam and Age of Steam. Issues a series of sophisticated bleeps and whistles.(2002) by Martin Wallace. 1-6 p; 120 minutes;.

And while you might need a different kind of strategy, a more nuanced one, so to say, against human opponents, you could try this against AI opponents and come up with some good results. Always look for hidden passages that may allow you to sneak up with a flank attack, and take advantage of the opportunities you spot. The Classic Flank AttackWe’ve mentioned multiple times how effective it could be to flank the enemy in order to improve your chances of defeating them. War commander rogue assault guide.

Weight: 3.5. Board Game Rank: None, Strategy Game Rank: None. I've been holding back since I've only played Steam (and only once). But I've done a decent amount of research into the three. So, to take with a pinch of salt, here's my understanding:Railways of the world is a step up from TTR (some randomness from cards etc). It seems like a good game but one I have next to no interest in (see rahdo's run through for a sense of game play).Age of Steam is the version for true enthusiasts of the system - it has a tonne of maps and has been analyzed to death on bgg. A light intro to 18xx.Steam is the one I picked up after a lot of thought (finding a cheap copy helped too!).

It can be played with 'Age of Steam' rules (and some maps) and also has a simpler set of rules for newbies. The rules are elegant and game play interesting (all of which is certainly true of AoS too). It's a little like the caverna vs. Agricola debate - very much based on what you are looking for in the system.
